U.S. Travel Ban on Nationals of 12 Countries Effective June 9: Is Vietnam Affected?

Table of Contents

On June 4, 2025, U.S. President Donald J. Trump signed a new Presidential Proclamation imposing a full entry ban on nationals of 12 countries and partial entry restrictions on nationals of seven additional countries. The measure officially took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on June 9, 2025.

12 Countries Subject to a Full Entry Ban

According to the White House Presidential Proclamation and international media reports, nationals of the following 12 countries are subject to a full suspension of entry into the United States:

Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

In addition, nationals of seven other countries — Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela — are subject to partial entry restrictions, depending on the visa category.

The Proclamation was introduced as part of the U.S. Government’s broader efforts to strengthen national security, immigration screening, and public safety controls.

Vietnam Is Not Included in the Affected Country List

Importantly, Vietnam is not included among the 19 countries subject to either full or partial entry restrictions under this Proclamation.

This means that Vietnamese citizens may continue to apply for U.S. visas and enter the United States in accordance with the standard visa application, screening, and admissibility requirements.

However, this development also reflects a broader trend toward stricter U.S. visa and immigration policies. Applicants who plan to travel to the United States in the near future should therefore prepare their documents carefully and take a proactive approach to their visa application timeline.

Why Should You Apply for a U.S. Visa as Early as Possible?

Although Vietnam is not affected by the new travel restrictions, this remains an important time to prepare and submit a U.S. visa application. There are several reasons why early preparation is strongly recommended.

First, interview appointment slots at the U.S. Embassy and Consulate are often limited, especially during peak travel seasons or following major policy announcements that may lead to a sudden increase in applications.

Second, many U.S. visas, particularly visitor visas, may be issued with long validity periods. Having a valid visa in advance allows applicants to plan future travel more flexibly without having to worry about last-minute appointment availability or processing delays.

Third, applicants who previously held a U.S. visa may, in certain cases, qualify for visa renewal through the interview waiver process. For example, applicants renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of the previous visa’s expiration may be eligible to apply without an in-person interview, provided they meet all applicable requirements. This can help save time and reduce unnecessary travel and administrative burdens.
