What is a Vietnam E-visa?

A Vietnam electronic visa (E-visa) is an official entry permit issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department through a fully online system. Under the amendments to the law introduced in 2023, a Vietnam E-visa is valid for up to 90 days and may allow single or multiple entry, depending on the applicant’s requirements. Unlike the traditional visa application process, which often requires applicants to visit an embassy, attend an interview, or submit documents by post, an E-visa allows travelers to apply, pay the visa fee, and receive the visa approval entirely online. This makes it an ideal option for tourists, business travelers, short-term visitors, and conference participants

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Vietnam E-visa?

Vietnam currently issues electronic visas to citizens of more than 80 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and many ASEAN countries.
To be eligible for a Vietnam E-visa, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Hold a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry;
  • Be outside Vietnam at the time of application;
  • Not be subject to an entry ban or entry restriction under Article 21 of the Law on Entry into, Exit from, Transit through, and Residence in Vietnam by Foreigners;
  • Have no criminal record or national security concerns that could prevent lawful entry into Vietnam.

How Long is a Vietnam E-visa Valid?

Under the recent legal changes, a Vietnam E-visa may have the following features:
  • A validity period of 30, 60, or 90 days;
  • The option of single or multiple entry;
  • The possibility of extension upon request through competent authorities or licensed agents.
Note: An E-visa is valid only at designated international border gates, including international airports, land border gates, and international seaports. A complete list of eligible entry points can be provided upon request.
Tourist Visa — Visa DL
Visa DL, also known as a tourist visa, is the most common type of visa used to enter Vietnam. It is generally issued to foreigners traveling to Vietnam for tourism purposes, such as sightseeing, vacations, or visiting friends and family.
This visa is typically valid for 15 to 30 days for a single entry. However, it may be possible to extend the visa after entering Vietnam, subject to applicable regulations and approval by the competent authorities.
Business Visa (Visa DN)
This type of visa is intended for foreigners traveling to Vietnam for business purposes such as attending meetings, conferences or contract negotiations. There are two types of business visas:
  • DN1: Single-entry visa;
  • DN2: Multiple-entry visa.
Work Visa (Visa LĐ)

This type of visa is for foreigners coming to Vietnam to work for a Vietnamese company. The company will sponsor your visa application.

There are two types of work visas:
  • LD1: Temporary work visa;
  • LD2: Long-term work visa.
Dependent Visa (Visa TT)
A TT visa allows foreigners to reside in Vietnam for an extended period. It is generally issued to the following individuals:
  • Parents, spouses, and children under 18 of Vietnamese citizens;
  • Parents, spouses, and children of foreigners who are currently residing in Vietnam with a valid visa.
Investment Visa (Visa ĐT)
Visa ĐT, also known as an investment visa, allows foreign investors to enter and reside in Vietnam for the purpose of investing in the country’s economy. There are four types of investment visas: ĐT1, ĐT2, ĐT3, and ĐT4.
Important Notes
  • If you are eligible for a five-year visa but do not plan to visit Vietnam frequently, or if you need a visa urgently, consider applying for a Vietnam E-visa.
  • The five-year visa exemption certificate may be issued either in Vietnam or abroad.
  • The exemption certificate itself cannot be extended. However, the permitted stay of 180 days per entry may be extended for up to six months with the sponsorship of a Vietnamese relative.

What Are Visa Extension and Visa Renewal in Vietnam?

This section explains the concepts of visa extension and visa renewal in Vietnam and clarifies the difference between the two.

Visa Extension

A visa extension is intended for foreigners who want to extend their current stay in Vietnam without leaving the country. If eligible, you will receive an extension stamp in your passport showing the new permitted period of stay.
Note: A visa extension is valid for only one entry.

Visa Renewal

Visa renewal is similar to extending the validity of a visa, as both options allow you to continue staying in Vietnam without leaving the country. However, the difference lies in the result: when you renew your visa, you will receive a new visa sticker together with a new validity stamp in your passport.
Therefore, visa renewal is usually more expensive than a visa extension because it includes additional fees for visa stamping and issuance of the new visa sticker.
Note: At present, the Vietnam Immigration Department does not provide visa renewal services. We will update this information as soon as an official announcement is issued.

Requirements for Visa Extension or Renewal

To qualify for a visa extension or renewal, your original passport must meet the following conditions:
  • Be valid for at least six months from the date of the extension or renewal;
  • Have at least two blank pages.
At present, the following visa types may be eligible for extension:
  • Vietnam business visa;
  • Vietnam five-year visa exemption certificate, provided that it remains valid but the permitted period of stay is about to expire.

Why Apply for a Visa Extension?

A visa extension is often the most convenient and practical solution for foreigners currently staying in Vietnam because it allows you to:
  • Stay legally in Vietnam after your visa expires without leaving and re-entering the country;
  • Avoid the risk of being blacklisted by the Immigration Department for overstaying;
  • Enjoy additional time to handle personal, work-related, or travel needs without interruption.

How to Extend a Vietnam Visa

You have two options: complete the procedure yourself in person at the Vietnam Immigration Department, or save time by using our Vietnam visa extension service.
If you use our visa extension service, you only need to complete the following three steps:
  1. Send us a soft copy of your passport and the page containing your current Vietnam visa. We will inform you whether your visa is eligible for extension.
  2. Send your original passport to our address and pay the extension fee.
  3. Receive your passport together with the extended stay permit after the process is completed.
Vietnam, an attractive destination in Southeast Asia, welcomes millions of visitors every year with its stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and world-famous cuisine. Before starting your journey, however, it is essential to understand the different types of visas available.

Who Is Eligible for a Five-Year Visa Exemption When Entering Vietnam?

Vietnam’s five-year visa exemption policy applies to the following individuals:
  • Overseas Vietnamese, meaning people of Vietnamese origin living abroad;
  • Spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens or overseas Vietnamese;
  • Applicants holding a passport valid for at least one year.
The visa exemption certificate acts as a long-term travel permit. It allows the holder to stay in Vietnam for up to 180 days per entry and to re-enter Vietnam multiple times without limitation during the five-year validity period.
If a longer stay is required, the 180-day stay may be extended for up to six months with the sponsorship of a relative.
The certificate must expire at least six months before the expiry date of the holder’s passport or equivalent travel document.
